| Those of you using the free edition of the AVG anti-virus software may have recently experienced difficulties with updating. Various error reports may appear including "...unable to detect an interet connection..." | |||
| This is not a problem with your machine or your connection but it is a fault with the AVG update server in the Czech Republic which they do not seem to have addressed for nearly a week now. Owing to the number of new virii appearing almost daily it is critical to keep your AV updated. |

| for some users the following will be a cure; | |||
| go to your AVG program file folder ( my computer\program files\grisoft\avg) and look for a file called either 'url' or url.ini. Right click on it and select 'rename'. Rename the file to either 'oldurl' or 'oldurl.ini'. | |||
| click here and select 'save target as...' and save this adapted url file into the same folder. Restart your system and try updating again. In many case this will fix the problem, if not... | |||
| ...go to AVAST and download their free 'home' version. This is as good as AVG and comes with excellent help files. You must uninstall AVG prior to installing AVAST as they will conflict otherwise. | |||
| To enable e-mail protection you will be asked for your mail server addresses. You should make a note of these prior to installation, to find them, open up outlook express, tools,accounts and select (single click) your primary mail account. Click on properties and then the servers tab and you can note down your incoming (POP) and outgoing (SMTP) mail server addresses. | |||
